alon_68: Myanmar, Nay Pyi Taw

Recently I read that the population of Nay Pyi Taw, the newly built capital of Myanmar, reached almost 1 million people. Does it sound reasonable for you? I see it completely impossible to accommodate so huge amount of people within so little time in the initially empty place, even in most technically developed and financially unlimited countries. Do you have any pro and con evidence on that statement?

cazadora_fosil: A study by a senior at Amherst College needs participants.

This came through the pipeline and I promised to post it in the community.

lockemaison: avatar the last airbender movie

If you haven't heard the hubbub by now, everyone (and not just asians, but most of the fanbase) is upset over the fact that they cast the live-action version of Avatar the Last Airbender with all white actors

Now I'm not going to say I watch the show much, but I have seen a few eps and I liked it. I'm also not really interested in seeing a live version of a cartoon, those never turn out well. This isn't about if the movie will be good. This is about principle.

It's plainly obvious the show is set in asian fantasy world (not a european fantasy world like lord of the rings). So it only makes the most sense that they cast a live version with asians. But they didn't. The major problem I have with this is that they are going to have a film in what is clearly asia, with temples and dragons and etc.. people in asian clothes and whatnot. And they are all white. That makes no sense to me. If a movie had completely classic African ancient setting and costumes, would you cast it with whites? If a movie had all old South American/hispanic costumes and design with the Mayan temples and costumes, would you cast it all white? No and no. It looks wrong. Not only that but it's a slap in the face to the struggling asian-american actors out there and to asian-america in general. Not only that but the fanbase for the show isn't happy either and that's who they are marketing this movie for. So what the heck is up with Hollywood? Hell, one of the voice actors in the original cartoon is Dante Basco and he would actually not be a bad idea to play the part he voices in the cartoon. The fact that it's an Indian director (M. Night himself) is even more disappointing.

So check out the protest and spread the word. This isn't just some small issue. I've seen a lot of non-asians out there who just don't get why this is wrong. They fail to see the racism and the history of exclusion asians have had in Hollywood for decades. They can't see why putting a bunch of non-asians in asian clothes and asian settings just looks ridiculous in the first place, and IMO is quite an insult.
